Angkor Wat: When someone says the world’s largest religious monument, we hear- Angkor Wat! It was constructed in 1150 to dedicate the Hindu deity, Lord Vishnu. It was designed to represent Mount Meru. The sacred five-peaked mountain Meru embodies Hindu, Jain, and Buddhist spirituality; Angkor Wat is a sight to behold.
Sydney Opera House: The Sydney Opera House, a multi-venue performing arts center in Australia, is a masterpiece of 20th-century architecture. Its unique design and stunning location on Sydney Harbor, New South Wales’s foreshore, symbolize human creativity and ingenuity. In 2007, UNESCO recognized its beauty and declared it a World Heritage Site.
Eiffel Tower: When you hear “France,” a wrought-iron lattice tower comes to mind. That is why the Eiffel Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks throughout the world. The construction took about 2 years (1887-1889) to complete. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1964. This tallest structure in Paris attracts millions of tourists every year.
Taj Mahal: The Taj Mahal, a legacy of the Mughals, stands as a symbol of eternal love and devotion. On the bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, the Taj Mahal is located. As the city hosts this iconic structure, Agra, often called ”The Taj City” of Uttar Pradesh, India, is the Taj Mahal. Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan decided to build this ivory-white in 1632 as a tribute to his beloved wife, Mumtaz. Its divine beauty and romantic history attract more than a million tourists to India annually.
Machu Picchu: Machu Picchu is an iconic landmark that is the most visited tourist spot in South America and the most visited place in Peru. Though the exact purpose of constructing Machu Picchu is still unknown, it is said that the Inca community built this as their religious sanctuary, an astronomical observatory, and a military fortress. Though most of the cities of the Incas were destroyed by the Spanish, Machu Picchu was in a hidden location, a lost city. Thus, it became one of the well-preserved Inca cities.
The Great Wall of China: It is said that the Great Wall of China is one of the world’s most expensive and iconic constructions. The Great Wall is not only a wall but also a complete integrated defense system, including barracks, fortresses, and garrison stations. It took over 2300 years to complete the construction. Different sections were built, destroyed, and renovated under the ruling periods of various dynasties.
