Energy Consumption from Renewable Sources (Top 69)

Energy & ResourcesApril 27, 2025

In 2023, renewable energy is increasingly important in the global energy mix, showing significant adoption progress. According to the latest data from the Energy Institute’s Statistical Review of World Energy, renewables are steadily transforming the energy landscape despite continued dominance of fossil fuels.

Global Renewable Energy Share

  • Renewables (including hydropower) contributed approximately 15% of global primary energy consumption in 2023, when measured using the substitution method.
  • Excluding hydropower, renewables accounted for 8% of primary energy consumption globally.
  • Fossil fuels still dominated the global energy mix at 81.5% in 2023, down slightly from 82% in 2022.

Leading Countries in Renewable Energy Adoption

  • Norway led globally with 72.09% of its primary energy consumption from renewable sources
  • Sweden (53.89%), Brazil (50.33%), Denmark (42.73%), and New Zealand (42.27%) rounded out the top five countries
  • The European Union averaged 24.5% renewable energy share in 2023, increasing by one percentage point from 2022.

Growth Trends

  • Renewable generation (excluding hydro) increased by 13% to reach a global high of 4,748 TWh in 2023.
  • Wind and solar energy contributed to 74% of the net additional electricity generated worldwide.
  • In 2023, China contributed 55% of all new renewable energy generation, exceeding the combined total of the rest of the world.
  • Renewables represented 85.5% of new global electricity generation capacity additions in 2023.

Electricity Sector Performance

  • Renewables accounted for 30% of global electricity generation in 2023, reaching this milestone for the first time.
  • Combined with nuclear power, low-carbon sources provided approximately 40% of global electricity in 2023.
  • Solar was the largest source of renewable capacity at 36.7% (1,418 GW), followed by hydropower at 32.7% (1,265 GW) and wind energy at 26.3% (1,017 GW).

Despite this progress, global primary energy consumption and fossil fuel use reached record highs in 2023, with emissions from energy increasing by 2% to exceed 40 gigatonnes of CO₂ for the first time.
